Cattaraugus County
Before its establishment in 1817, Cattaraugus County was home to various tribes, including the now-extinct Wenrohronon tribe and the Seneca people. The county's name is derived from the Seneca word "Kadark" or "Cataroghu," which means "bad-smelling banks." This name was about the natural gas leaks from rock seams in the area. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the county's population stood at 77,042, reflecting a 4.1% decrease from 2010. The population decline was primarily attributed to the economic challenges faced by the region during the decade.
Cattaraugus County's judicial system includes a variety of courts such as the Supreme Court, County Court, Family Court, Surrogate's Court, City Courts, and several Town and Village Courts.
