Douglas County

Douglas County was formed in 1861 by the Nevada Territorial Legislature. It has an estimated population of 49,476 and a land area of about 710.5 square miles. The administrative headquarters is in the Town of Minden.

The Douglas County court system comprises a District Court and some Justice Courts. The Douglas County District Court has jurisdiction over felony, probate, family law, domestic relations, mental health, and civil cases involving claims above $15,000. The court has a Juvenile Probation Department that serves as a juvenile court per Title 5 of the Nevada Revised Statutes. It has unique programs like SAFE and CASA that provide volunteer advocates for cases involving vulnerable adults and abused and neglected children. It also hears appeals from the Justice Courts and administrative agencies. The East Fork Justice Court and Tahoe Justice Court deal with misdemeanors, small claims, traffic infractions, ordinance violations, and civil cases, which cost up to $10,000. Several Specialty Courts, including Drug Court and DUI Court, are located within the county.
