Luna County
Located in southwestern New Mexico, Luna County is home to at least 25,000 people. The county was created in 1901 and occupies about 2,965 square miles of total land area, making it the 22nd largest county in the state by total area.
New Mexico's Sixth Judicial District covers Luna County and serves residents through a Magistrate Court and a District Court. The Magistrate Court is a court of limited jurisdiction. It hears cases relating to contracts, torts, felony preliminary hearings, traffic violations, DUI/DWI, and real property rights. On the other hand, the District Court is a court of general jurisdiction. It handles civil cases in which the amount in dispute is $10,000 or less, real estate disputes, contract disputes, and domestic relations matters. The District Court also has jurisdiction over criminal cases, including misdemeanors and felonies. It also has a division that handles child abuse or neglect, adoption, juvenile delinquency, and emancipation of minors cases.
