Middlesex County
Located halfway between Philadelphia and New York, Middlesex County consists of 25 communities, including Cranbury Township. Founded in 1683, Middlesex County lies in north central New Jersey and its county seat is New Brunswick. The county was named for Middlesex, England and has a population of over 825,015 residents, making it the second most populous county in New Jersey.
The judiciary, or court system in Middlesex County comprises municipal courts, surrogate's courts, and superior courts. The municipal courts handle every aspect of a parking violation, moving violation, petty disorderly person or disorderly person criminal complaint, and violations of municipal ordinances.
Most of the cases filed in Middlesex County are heard in the municipal courts. The court jurisdiction included assault, trespassing, shoplifting, minor disputes between neighbors, and cases involving hunting, fishing, and boating laws.
Surrogate courts in Middlesex County are a branch of the state superior court and have limited jurisdiction in certain matters. They handle probate wills, invest minors' funds, administration of estates without wills, appoint guardians of minors, guardianships for alleged incapacitated adults, process contested probate matters, and process adoptions.

The superior court is the court of general jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases. The court has divisions based on case type, such as civil, criminal, family, and chancery. Superior Courts in Middlesex County may transfer cases to the state tax court when taxation expertise is required. Also, Middlesex superior courts may grant the municipal courts in the county jurisdiction to handle motor vehicle cases resulting in bodily injury or death.
