Atlantic County
Atlantic County, established in 1837 near the Jersey Shore, has a land area of 555.7 square miles. Its county seat is Mays Landing, and as of the 2020 census, its population was 274,534. Atlantic County is New Jersey's 15th most populated county and the third largest county by land area.
The Atlantic County court system comprises the Central Municipal Court of Atlantic County and the New Jersey Superior Court located in the county. The Central Municipal Court of Atlantic County handles traffic violations, minor crime offenses, municipal ordinance offenses, and small claims cases within the county. The Central Municipal Court of Atlantic County is the first regional court in New Jersey and is shared by all 23 municipalities in the county. It began operations in January 2022 after the New Jersey Senate Bill S3049was signed into law in August 2021. The New Jersey Superior Court in Atlantic County is the county's trial court of general jurisdiction. It hears criminal, civil, juvenile, and family cases. Its Appellate Division also hears appeals from the Municipal Court.
