Walsh County
Located in the northeast part of the state, Walsh County was named after George Walsh. He was a politician and newspaperman in the Grand Forks area. It was established in 1881 following the arrival of the first settlers in the 1870s. Currently, the population of Walsh County is 10,438, covering 1,294 square miles.
Walsh County is under the Northeast Judicial District, created in 1979. The Northeast Judicial District is part of Unit 1, which also has the Northeast Central Judicial District. The population is served by a district court and two municipal courts. District courts deal with civil, criminal, family, and juvenile cases. Municipal courts also preside over civil and criminal courts, though the difference is that they handle misdemeanors and petty offenses.
