Union County

Union County was established in 1842 from Anson and Mecklenburg Counties. It borders Charlotte to the southeast and South Carolina to the North. Before the Europeans settled, Union County was home to Catawba and Waxhaw natives. The 632 square mile of land has a population of about 238,267 residents.

Union County is in North Carolina Prosecutorial District 30. It is served by the North Carolina Superior Court District 30 and the North Carolina District Court District 30. The Superior Court is responsible for deliberating on serious offenses and criminal felonies in the county. They also handle civil cases like family law, juvenile, and probate issues. Additionally, they deliberate on appeals for small claims, civil cases, and misdemeanors. On the other hand, the District Courts handle less severe criminal offenses like infractions, misdemeanors, and juvenile cases. Union County has an average of 36,000 cases filed annually.

The Union County Clerk of Court's office is responsible for filing and maintaining records about cases in the county. However, it is worth noting that the Clerks of the Superior Court in North Carolina are also judges. The County Clerk of the Court's office is tasked with filing, processing, indexing, and preserving all court documents. Additionally, Clerks of the Superior Court act as Judge of Probate, having exclusive jurisdiction over matters regarding the administration of estates and wills in the county. They also preside over other legal issues like incompetence, name changes, petitions for surplus funds, foreclosures, adoptions, guardianship proceedings, and partitions of real estate property.
