Mecklenburg County
Formed from parts of Anson County in 1762, Mecklenburg County is located in North Carolina's Piedmont region. The county has an estimated population of 1.12 million, and the seat of government is Charlotte.
The Mecklenburg County court system comprises a Superior Court and a District Court. The Mecklenburg County Superior Court has general jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases where the amount in contention exceeds $25,000. It hears misdemeanor and infraction appeals from the District Court. On the other hand, the District Court handles cases involving misdemeanors, small claims (less than $10,000), and civil cases where the amount in contention is less than $25,000. It operates a Family Court that addresses family-related issues, such as juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, divorce, and child custody.
