Henderson County

Henderson County was formed from the southern part of Buncombe County in 1838 and named after Leonard Henderson, a North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice. It has 372.95 square miles of land and another 2.14 square miles of rivers and other water bodies. As of the 2020 census, its population was 116,281. Hendersonville is its county seat and largest city.

The Henderson County court system comprises the Henderson County Superior Court and Henderson County District Court. The Henderson County District Court is a trial court with jurisdiction over misdemeanors, municipal ordinance violations, and traffic infractions. It can also handle civil cases with claims of less than $25,000 and preliminary hearings for felony cases. In addition, the court handles juvenile and domestic relations such as divorce, juvenile delinquency, adoption, child support, and termination of parenting rights.

The Henderson County Superior Court has general jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases. It hears some misdemeanors, all felonies, and civil cases with more than $25,000 in claims. The court also has original jurisdiction over probate matters, including the admission of wills and administration of estates and trusts.
