Granville County

Granville County was created in 1746 from parts of Edgecombe County and named for the 2nd Earl Granville, John Lord Carteret. The county's land area is about 532 square miles, and its population is over 60,000. Its county seat and largest community is Oxford.

Granville County's judicial system includes the Superior and District Courts. The Superior Court serves as the county's general jurisdiction court. It decides all felony criminal proceedings, civil actions for claims above $25,000, and other legal matters beyond the scope of the District Court. The Superior Court has exclusive jurisdiction over court cases involving the validation of wills, guardianships, conservatorships, and administration of decedents' estates. Unsatisfied parties can appeal District Court judgments at the Superior Court. Meanwhile, the Granville County District Court typically hears misdemeanor trials and civil lawsuits involving up to $25,000 in financial disputes. District Court judges also rule on family-related cases like divorces, child custody, restraining orders, and juvenile delinquencies. Landlord-tenant disputes and small claims for $10,000 or less are heard at the Magistrate Division of Granville County's District Court.

The Granville County Clerk of Court maintains the following public court records:

  • Civil records
  • Criminal court records
  • Probate records
  • Traffic records
  • Family law records

These records, which may be in paper or digital format, typically contain details of court proceedings in the Superior and District Courts. They provide information about the parties involved, case filings, court rulings, schedules, transcripts, evidence, judgments, and any orders issued by the courts. According to the North Carolina Public Records Act, public access to Granville County court records ensures transparency in the judicial process, allowing individuals to review the history and outcomes of legal matters handled in the county. However, juvenile, adoption, and mental health records remain confidential and are accessible exclusively to the record owners and their legal counsel.
