Gaston County
The early settlers in Gaston County were Europeans who were Scots, Irish, Pennsylvania Dutch, and English. It was founded in 1846 from parts of Lincoln County and named after William Gaston, a U.S Representative from North Carolina. The county seat was formerly in Dallas but was moved to Gastonia in 1911. The last census puts the county's population at 27,943.
