Davidson County
Established in 1822, and located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, Davidson County was named after William Lee Davidson, a Continental Army general during the American Revolutionary War. It spreads across 567.70 square miles with a population of 168,930 inhabitants. Lexington is Davidson's county seat while Thomasville is its largest city.
Davidson County has four court locations made of two District Courts and two Superior Courts. The Superior Courts are charged with the responsibility of presiding over all civil cases (amount of money involved in dispute is $25,000 or more) and criminal cases (felonies, misdemeanors, and infraction appeals from District Courts). They also preside over estate administration and probate matters.
North Carolina District Courts are divided into 43 districts and are located in the county seat of each county. Davidson County District Courts preside over civil (divorce and child custody), criminal, family, juvenile, traffic violation, and magistrate matters. Magistrates are nominated by the Office of the Clerk of Superior Courts to preside over civil matters involving small claims, landlord-tenant, and cases involving recovery of personal property. The criminal cases heard by magistrates involve issuing warrants for arrest and setting bails.
The Davidson County Clerk of Superior Courts performs statutory duties related to filing, preserving, and disseminating court records to the public when requested. The Office of the Clerk of Superior Courts is in charge of court records for both the District Courts and the Superior Courts.
