Leflore County
Located within Mississippi's delta region, Leflore County was created from parts of Sunflower, Carrol, and Tallahatchie Counties in 1871. The county was named for the leader of the Choctaw nation - Greenwood LeFlore. The county's 594.1 square miles of land area is home to over 28,000 residents.
Six separate court types make up the Leflore County trial court system. These are municipal courts, justice court, youth court, county court, chancery court, and circuit court.
Municipal courts hear cases including ordinance violations and traffic offenses. The justice court serves the public by processing civil actions not exceeding $2,500 and misdemeanor criminal cases per Section 9-11-11 of the Mississippi Code. The justice court handles preliminary hearings in felony cases and has jurisdiction over traffic citation issues by the state Highway Patrol, Valley State University Police, the Public Service Commission, and the Leflore County Sheriff's Department. Wildlife citations and affidavits in the county are adjudicated in the justice court.
The county court has exclusive jurisdiction over matters of juvenile matters and eminent domain proceedings, while the chancery court has jurisdiction over disputes relating to equity, guardianships, domestic matters, wills, sanity hearings, and challenges to the constitutionality of Mississippi laws. Land records in the county are filed in the chancery court.
Leflore County circuit court has original jurisdiction in all civil and criminal matters not exclusively in the jurisdiction of another court. The court presides over appeals from the lower courts.
The chancery clerk of court maintains the court dockets and records of the actions in the court. To obtain information on public records in the court, contact the office of the clerk at:
