Harrison County
Established in 1841, Harrison County has a total area of 976 square miles with water accounting for 41% of its total area. It is Mississippi's second-most populous county, with over 218,000 residents. The county was named in honor of U.S President William Henry Harrison, and the county seats are Gulfport and Biloxi.
The Harrison County court system consists of the following courts:
- Harrison County Circuit Court : hears criminal matters which do not fall within the exclusive jurisdiction of other courts. It also handles civil actions where the disputed amount does not exceed $200
- Harrison County Court : handles all eminent domain, unlawful entry and detainer cases, and the partition of personal property. This court also handles criminal cases that are not capital offenses
- 8th Chancery District Court : holds hearings for all property matters, as well as cases of equity, will, trust, child custody, divorce, and juvenile delinquency
- Harrison County Justice Court : hears criminal cases in which the punishment is a fine or a short jail term. Furthermore, it has jurisdiction over small claims in which the amount in dispute is $3,500 or less
- Harrison County Youth Court : deals with cases of juvenile delinquency, juvenile criminal offenses, and termination of parental rights. It also handles the cases of children in need of special care or mental treatment
- Harrison County Municipal Courts: oversee the violations of city and traffic ordinances, perform marriage ceremonies, and conduct preliminary hearings in felony cases
