St. Francois County
Located in the Lead Belt part of the State of Missouri, St. Francois County was officially organized in December 1821. The county has a population of over 65,000 people and is named after the St. Francis River. St. Francois county seat and largest city is Farmington.
The court system in St. Francois County comprises municipal courts and circuit courts. There are 8 municipal courts in the county while only one circuit court exists there. Local or municipal ordinance violations are handled by the municipal courts.
The circuit court is the court of general jurisdiction in the county, over all civil and criminal cases. The court has several divisions, including associate circuit, family court, probate court, traffic court, juvenile court, and small claims court.
The associate circuit division has judges tasked with handling misdemeanor criminal cases and infractions. The probate court division handles probate matters, such as wills, guardianship, and conservatorship. The juvenile court hears matters relating to children, while the family court handles familial and domestic relations matters. The small claims court handles general civil claims for amounts less than $3,000, exclusive of interest.
Public St. Francois County court records are maintained by the county circuit clerk. The office is responsible for maintaining all court proceedings electronically for court matters including but not limited to misdemeanor and felony criminal cases, dissolution of marriage, traffic, modifications, adult abuse, paternity, adoptions, juvenile delinquent, abuse and neglect, associate and circuit civil cases, small claims, probate matters, and garnishments.
