Washington County
Established in 1849 and named after George Washington, Washington County is situated in the eastern part of Minnesota. It covers approximately 423 square miles. The county is estimated to have a population of 278,936 as of July 1, 2023, according to the United States Population Census. The county seat is Stillwater. Washington County court system includes a District Court, which has several specialized divisions that handle a variety of cases.
The Washington County District Court has jurisdiction over criminal, civil, probate, and family matters. The court hears civil cases involving claims that exceed $15,000, as well as criminal cases, including felonies. The Family Division of the District Court addresses matters relating to divorce, child and spouse support, child custody, and other family-related matters. The Probate Unit handles cases involving probate of wills, estate administration, and guardianships. Tax-related matters in Washington County are handled by the Tax Court.
