Mecosta County

Located in west-central Michigan, Mecosta County was established in 1859. It is named after Chief Mecosta, a leader of the Potawatomi people. The county covers approximately 571 square miles. The county seat is Big Rapids. As of July 1, 2023, Mecosta County's population was estimated at 41,099, according to the United States Census Bureau. The county's judicial system consists of the Circuit Court, Probate Court, and District Court.

The Mecosta County Circuit Court handles criminal cases, such as felonies, and civil cases where the amount in dispute is above $25,000. This court also deals with family-related matters, including divorce, custody, and child support cases. It also hears appeals from the District and Probate Courts. The District Court in Mecosta County has exclusive jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters. This includes civil suits involving $25,000 or less, landlord-tenant disputes, and misdemeanors for which punishment is not more than one year in jail.
