Genesee County
Genesee County was created in 1835 and occupies a land area of approximately 637 square miles in Michigan. It has a population of over 405,000 residents, making it Michigan's fifth most populous county. The City of Flint serves as the county seat and largest city in Genesee.
Genesee County has three trial courts: the Circuit, District, and Probate Courts. The Circuit Court, also known as Michigan's 7th Judicial Circuit Court, has general jurisdiction over all criminal and civil cases outside the scope of other courts in Genesee County. Legal matters exclusive to the Circuit Court include felony trials, civil equity cases, monetary disputes exceeding $25,000, and appeals from administrative agencies. The Circuit Court's Family Division deals with all juvenile and domestic relations cases, including paternity, adoption, divorce, and delinquent acts.
Genesee County has a District Court that presides over minor civil and criminal proceedings. District Court judges in the county handle misdemeanors and conduct preliminary hearings for felony cases. They also oversee monetary claims for $25,000, small claims where the disputed amount is up to $5,000, and landlord-tenant disputes. Meanwhile, the Probate Court in Genesee County handles cases involving trusts, guardianships, and settlement of decedents' estates.
