Calhoun County
Calhoun County was established in 1829 and named after former United States Vice President John C. Calhoun. It was organized as an independent county in 1832. Its land area measures 706 square miles while there are 12 square miles of water bodies in the county. As of the 2020 census, Calhoun County has a population of 134,310. The county seat is Marshall, and its largest city is Battle Creek.
The court system in Calhoun County comprises probate, district, and circuit courts. The Calhoun County Probate Court is in charge of admission of wills, administering trusts and estates, treating mentally ill individuals, and appointing guardianships and conservatorships.
The 10th District Court is responsible for minor misdemeanors, county ordinance cases, civil marriages, landlord-tenant disputes, civil cases with less than $25,000 claims, and most traffic infractions. It has a Small Claims Division responsible for civil cases with less than $5,000 claims.
The 37th Judicial Circuit Court tries misdemeanors punishable with more than 12 months of incarceration as well as all felonies. It also hears appeals from district and probate courts, administrative state agencies, and local government boards. It handles all civil cases involving more than $25,000 in claims as well as domestic relations cases, family cases, adoptions, juvenile delinquency matters, and child protective proceedings.
