Benzie County
Benzie County is the smallest county in Michigan by land area. It only has 321 square miles of land and water bodies measuring 540 square miles. It is located in the northwest part of the Lower Michigan region and has a population of 17,970 as of the 2020 census. Benzie County has over 100 lakes and is home to Crystal Mountain, a top-rated ski resort. Its county seat is the Village of Beulah.
The Benzie County court system comprises Probate, District, and Circuit Courts. The Benzie Probate Court handles the appointment of conservatorships, guardianships, administration of estates, trusts, and treatment/commitment of mentally ill persons. It also handles proceedings relating to missing persons and secret marriages. The 85th District Court located in the county handles all minor misdemeanors, most traffic violations, county ordinance cases, civil weddings, landlord/tenant relations, and civil cases with claims below $25,000.
The 19th Judicial Circuit Court, situated in Beulah, has jurisdiction over Benzie and Manistee counties. It is the trial court of general jurisdiction. It hears all felony and certain misdemeanor cases. It has jurisdiction over all civil cases involving more than $25,000 in claims. It also handles all domestic relations cases, family cases, juvenile delinquency matters, adoptions, lawsuits involving state laws, and appeals from district and probate courts.
