Frederick County

Frederick County was established in 1748 by the Province of Maryland before US independence in 1776. After independence, the county was split into three counties, with the northernmost county retaining the name. Frederick County, with a total land area of 660 square miles, is the largest county in Maryland. As of the 2020 census, its population was 271,717. The county is home to the US presidential retreat, Camp David. Frederick City is the county seat and largest city in the county.

The Frederick County court system comprises the following:

  • The Frederick County Orphan's Court - hears most probate matters, some land-related matters, and guardianship of minors
  • The Frederick County District Court - hears civil claims with less than $25,000 in claims, landlord-tenant cases, domestic violence protective orders, some juvenile cases, and peace orders. It also handles municipal ordinance violations, traffic infractions, and most misdemeanors
  • The Frederick County Circuit Court - as the highest court in the county, it handles all cases beyond the jurisdiction of other courts. It hears civil cases with more than $5,000 claims, felony cases, and domestic violence protective orders. It also hears family law cases, such as divorce, annulment, child support, and adoptions
