Cecil County
Cecil County is situated in the northeastern region of Maryland. It was formed on June 6, 1674 and named after Cecil Calvert, the first Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland. Cecil County has a total area of 418 square miles and over 103,725 residents. Its county seat is in Elkton.
The Cecil Circuit Court is a court of general jurisdiction in charge of resolving issues related to civil and criminal cases. This court handles civil cases in which the amount involved in dispute is $5,000 or more as well as issues on divorce, domestic violence, and child custody.
The District Court presides over replevins, misdemeanors, landlord-tenant cases, traffic violations, and felony cases. The Cecil County District Court does not conduct jury trials.
The Orphans' Court conducts trials on adoption, probate, child support, and guardianship cases. It also has authority to decide on tax and land ownership issues related to probate cases and shares certain jurisdiction with the Circuit Court on guardianship matters relating to minors.
