Tangipahoa County

Tangipahoa Parish was carved in 1869 from parts of Livingston, St. Helena, St. Tammany, and Washington Parishes in Louisiana. It has a land mass of about 791.2 square miles and a population estimated at 133,953. The parish seat is located in Amite City.

Tangipahoa Parish court system comprises two District Courts, a City Court, Mayor's Courts, and Justice of the Peace Courts. The District Courts handle civil, criminal, and probate cases in Tangipahoa Parish. It offers specialized court services through the Adult Drug Court, Veterans Treatment Court, and Juvenile Drug Court. It also hears appeals from the lower courts. The City Court of Hammond deals with misdemeanors, traffic infractions, juvenile, small claims (less than $5,000), and civil cases with claims less than $30,000. Some cities within Tangipahoa Parish have Mayor's Courts, which preside over traffic infractions and ordinance violations. The Justice of Peace Courts has jurisdiction over minor civil cases where the amount in contention is less than $5,000.
