St. Tammany County

St. Tammany Parish, which was created in 1810, is located in Louisiana and has Covington as its county seat. It is the state's fourth most populous parish, boasting a population of over 270,000 people. It was named for the legendary Lenape Chief of Chiefs, Tamanend.

The trial court organization in the county is composed of city, district mayor's, and justice of the peace courts. The St. Tammany District Court, or the 22nd Judicial District Court, is a general jurisdiction court that hears all civil and criminal cases, including felonies and property-related suits. It shares concurrent jurisdiction with the City Courts over some offenses relating to driving while intoxicated.

The City Court here has a limited jurisdiction court that oversees non-jury trials and crimes that are not subject to a hard labor penalty. Misdemeanors, city ordinance violations, civil claims with financial limits, and traffic infractions also fall within the City Court's jurisdiction. Each Justice of the Peace Court located in St. Tammany has a limited jurisdiction that oversees preliminary felony hearing proceedings, litter violations, misdemeanors, and general civil claims with financial caps. The Mayor's Courts in St. Tammany hear cases relating to traffic and ordinance violations, along with other offenses for which fines, prison terms, probations, and court costs can be imposed.

St. Tammany court records are files and records that document legal proceedings in court trials. They include notices, indexes, calendars, summons, minutes, verdicts, and decrees. They are organized and arranged by the records custodian and serve as an important legal reference for future litigations. Common St. Tammany court records that are created from various court cases include:
