St. Landry County

Located in the heart of Louisiana, St. Landry Parish was established in 1807. It was named after a notable bishop, St. Landry of Paris. The parish spans approximately 939 square miles. As of July 1, 2023, the United States Census Bureau estimates that there are about 81,464 residents in the parish. The parish seat is Opelousas. St. Landry's judicial system consists of the District Court, City Courts, Justice of the Peace Courts, and Mayor's Courts.

The St Landry Parish District Court has jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases. The court presides over felony and property cases. St. Landry Parish District Court has divisions that preside over family, juvenile, and drug cases. The jurisdiction of the City Courts is limited to certain types of civil and criminal cases. The City Court has a Small Claims division for civil law cases involving disputes involving claims that are less than $3,000, exclusive of costs, interests, fees, and fines. The civil and criminal jurisdiction of the Justice of the Peace Courts is limited. They share limited jurisdiction with District Courts over some civil cases with financial limits. Justice of the Peace Courts does not operate in jurisdictions with City Courts. The Mayor's Courts in St Landry Parish handle cases involving local ordinances and traffic violations.
