Natchitoches County
Natchitoches Parish was formed in 1805 and named for the Natchitoches people. Its land area is approximately 1,252 square miles, making it Louisiana's fourth-largest county by land. As of 2022, The parish has a population of over 37,400 residents. The county seat and largest city is the City of Natchitoches.
Natchitoches Parish has four trial courts, including the District, Justice of the Peace, City, and Mayor's Courts. The District Court in Natchitoches Parish, also known as Louisiana's 10th Judicial District Court, has general jurisdiction over all legal matters in the parish. It typically presides over felony trials, real estate disputes, professional malpractices, and other monetary disputes exceeding $25,000. Natchitoches Parish's Justice Courts exercise limited jurisdiction over civil violation trials, criminal pre-trials, and probate cases. The City Court in Natchitoches handles misdemeanors and all other criminal cases involving only bench trials. Meanwhile, civil claims for $25,000 or less, rental property complaints, and small claims under $5,000 in financial settlements are resolved at the Natchitoches Parish City Courts. The Mayor's Courts have exclusive jurisdiction over ordinance violations and traffic Infractions.
