Fayette County
Fayette County lies in central Kentucky and was established in 1780. Fayette is the Commonwealth's second-most populous county with a population of 320,154. It is consolidated with Lexington, its county seat, and together they share the same territory, government, and population.
Fayette County has a trial court system composed of two principal courts, namely: a circuit court and a district court. The Fayette County Circuit Court exercises general jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases, excluding the District Court cases. The Circuit Court's criminal cases include felonies, lesser offenses, and capital offenses. It also handles civil cases, including claims exceeding $5,000, real property title disputes, contested probate suits, and administrative agency appeals. Furthermore, it also has appellate jurisdiction over the District Court's judgments. The Family Court division of the Circuit Court hears all cases relating to family and children, including child support, paternity, parental rights termination, child abuse, and domestic violence. The Fayette County District Court has limited jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases, including initial felony hearings, misdemeanors, traffic infractions, probate-related cases, civil claims for 5,000 and less, small claims for up to $2,500, and mental commitment matters
