Vanderburgh County
Vanderburgh County was initiated in 1818 and named after Captain Henry Vanderburgh, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. The county has a population of 180,136 and covers only 236 square miles. Vanderburgh's county seat is in Evansville, the eighth smallest county in the state. Its economic mainstays are healthcare, financial services, education, manufacturing, and retail.
Vanderburgh's judicial system is organized in Title 33 of the state code, entailing the Superior Courts and Circuit Courts. The Superior Court has general jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases but shares jurisdiction over probate, mental health, and juvenile cases. Vanderburgh's Circuit Court also hears criminal and civil cases. However, the court hears juvenile matters and domestic abuse incidents. The Courts average between 55,000 and 60,000 new cases annually.
Court records are documents generated during proceedings, including witness testimonials, orders, decrees, judgments, or minute entries. Records are maintained by the Clerk of the Circuit Court. However, particular records, like sealed documents, mental health cases, and confidential information files, are only accessible to certain parties. The Clerk is the trustee for child support collections paid through their office. They collect court costs, filing fees, and judgment revenues in civil or traffic infractions.
Individuals may visit the office in person or access documentation via mail. There is an application form to fill out along with the specific details of the requested records as well as the record seeker's information. A copy of the records is $1 per page and an additional $1 if certified. The fees are payable via money order or money order. Those who request the records through mail must also include stamped envelopes, which are self-addressed. That is to the County Clerk on 828 Sycamore Street.
The Clerk offers access to the following types of cases
- Civil cases
- Criminal cases
- Probate cases
- Juvenile cases
