Shelby County was established in 1821 and is located in central Indiana. The county seat is Shelbyville. Shelby County covers an area of 411.1 square miles of land, ranking 23rd in size among Indiana's 92 counties. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the population was approximately 45,055, placing it in the mid-range for county populations in the state. Shelby County's court system consists of a Circuit Court and two Superior Courts.

The Shelby County Circuit Court has original jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases but primarily handles matters beyond the scope of other courts. This court oversees felonies, misdemeanors, and ordinance violations. It handles most juvenile cases, including delinquency, child abuse, and termination of parental rights. The Circuit Court shares jurisdiction with Superior Courts for certain juvenile, mental health, and probate matters. The Shelby County Superior Courts have general jurisdiction over most civil and criminal cases, including traffic violations, misdemeanors, small claims, and family law issues such as divorces and child support.

Shelby County court records are created during legal proceedings in the Circuit and Superior Courts. These records encompass evidence, case filings, motions, court orders, and final judgments, documenting the judicial process for civil, criminal, and small claims. Shelby County offers public access to a wide range of court records, including the following:

  • Probate Records
  • Civil Records

In Shelby County, the County Clerk's Office is responsible for maintaining and keeping court records.
