Montgomery County
Montgomery County is located in west-central Indiana and was established in 1823. The county is named after Richard Montgomery, a general in the American Revolutionary War. Spanning about 504.6 square miles, Montgomery County is home to approximately 38,018 residents. The county seat is Crawfordsville, a historic town known for its cultural heritage and as the residence of Wabash College, known for being among the first private colleges for liberal arts specifically for men within the United States.
Montgomery County's court system is part of Indiana's Unified Judicial Structure, which includes a Circuit Court and a Superior Court. The Circuit Court has general jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases, including felonies, misdemeanors, and ordinance violations. It handles family law cases, such as divorce, child custody, and protective orders. Its jurisdiction also includes cases involving juvenile delinquency, adoptions, child abuse, the termination of parental rights as well as probate matters, including wills, estates, guardianships, and mental health commitments. Meanwhile, the Superior Court shares concurrent jurisdiction with the Circuit Court but often specializes in cases such as small claims, traffic violations, and certain civil matters. It also oversees class A misdemeanors, most juvenile cases, mental health evaluations, and probate cases.
Montgomery County court records document judicial proceedings and are maintained for public access and transparency. These records include:
