Marshall County

Marshall County was founded in 1835 by the Indiana State Legislature and named in honor of John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. More than 46,000 residents live in Marshall County as of 2022. The county's most populous city and government seat is the City of Plymouth.

Marshall County's judicial system consists of the Circuit and Superior Courts. The Circuit Court handles all legal proceedings that are outside the purview of other trial courts in Marshall County. It resolves all civil lawsuits where the amount in controversy is more than $10,000. Other cases heard at the Circuit Court include adoptions, domestic relations cases, juvenile matters, mortgage foreclosures, tort claims, trusts, and protective order cases.

Marshall County has three Superior Courts. The Superior Court 1 hears capital murders and all felony-related trials. It has limited jurisdiction over certain probate and family law cases. Meanwhile, the Superior Court 2 rules on less severe criminal cases such as misdemeanors and ordinance violations. Marshall County's Superior Court 3 is tasked with handling civil claims for $10,000 or less, small claims cases, mental health commitments, and landlord-tenant disputes.
