Madison County
Madison County was founded on January 4, 1823, and has an estimated population of 132,504 people. Its terrain mostly consists of flat surfaces while the White River and Fall Creek are hilly areas. It was named for James Madison and its county seat is Anderson. Its total area measures 452.90 square miles.
The Circuit Court and the City and Towns Courts are both trial courts in the county; the first being of general jurisdiction and the second; being limited jurisdiction. The Circuit Court has the authority to adjudicate most cases in the county. It hears divorce decrees, legal separation, contract disputes, small claims, and felonies, and receives case appeals from the Town and City Courts. The Town and City Courts preside over ordinance violations, minor civil matters, and traffic cases such as infractions. Jury trials are not held in the Town and City Courts but defendants are at liberty to request a trial by jury.
Court records are in the custody of the Circuit Court Clerk. The maintenance, accuracy, and correctness of such records are assured by the Clerk. Court records are files that include the adjudication of various cases in court. The outcome of these cases is usually determined by a presiding judge.
To promote transparency and enlighten the public about the activities of the judiciary, certain records are made open for public inspection:
- Family Court Records
- Criminal Court Records
- Probate Court Records
- Civil Court Records
- Traffic Court Records
