Jefferson County

Jefferson County was established in 1811 and named after Thomas Jefferson, a past American president. The county has a land area of 360.7 square miles and a population of over 33,000 residents. Its county seat and largest city is Madison.

The Jefferson County trial court system consists of a Circuit Court and a Superior Court. As the highest trial court in the county, the Circuit Court has jurisdiction over a wide range of cases beyond the authority of the Superior Court. Cases typically heard at the Circuit Court include juvenile cases, mental health cases, probate matters, paternity cases, and serious criminal cases like murder and felonies. In contrast, the Superior Court exercises jurisdiction over misdemeanors and less serious felonies, small claims, eviction cases involving damages of $10,000 or less, and infractions.

Jefferson County public court records are official documents containing information relating to the legal proceedings of the Circuit and Superior Courts.
