Huntington County
Originally part of the Adams New Purchase in 1827, Huntington County was organized in 1834. It is named in honor of Samuel Huntington from Connecticut, with the City of Huntington serving as the county seat. The county has an area of 384 square miles and a population of 38,781.
The three courts within the Huntington County court system are the Circuit Court, Superior Court, and Drug Court. The Huntington Circuit Court primarily handles civil lawsuits, such as personal injury claims, injunctions, and administrative appeals. It has exclusive jurisdiction over all probate matters, including estates, adoptions, and trusts. The criminal jurisdiction of the Circuit Court is limited to criminal non-support and welfare fraud.
The Huntington Superior Court hears all criminal cases, including class D felonies, major felonies, misdemeanors, and domestic violence. Its civil division holds hearings for domestic relations matters, probate, juvenile matters, and environmental cases.
The Drug Court offers a sentencing alternative for persons in the criminal justice system with substance use disorders. This court aims at reducing recidivism and improving public safety by providing treatment and services to help participants become responsible citizens.
Huntington County court records include information and data such as pleadings, motions, orders, and evidence created, collected, or maintained by the County Clerk about specific cases. Unless deemed confidential under Access to Court Records (A.C.R. Rule 5) or if an affected party obtains an order prohibiting public access, court records are available for public inspection.
