Howard County

Located in the center of Indiana, Howard County was founded in 1844 and named after General Tilghman Ashurst Howard. It has a population of over 83,000 and a land area of 293 square miles. Kokoma is its largest city and county seat.

The Howard County court system comprises Circuit and Superior Courts. The Howard County Circuit Court is the preeminent court in the county, and it generally handles cases beyond the jurisdiction of the Superior Court. It has exclusive jurisdiction over juvenile matters, such as juvenile delinquency, truancy, minor drug rehabilitation, juvenile mental health treatment, and minor dependency. It also hears civil cases, divorces, annulments, maintenance, paternity, probate matters, and felonies. In addition, the Circuit Court serves as an appellate court for the Superior Court.

The Howard County Superior Court is divided into four courts: Superior Court I, Superior Court II, Superior Court III, and Superior Court IV. They hear domestic violence, criminal drug cases, misdemeanors, traffic offenses, municipal ordinance violations, civil cases, admission of wills, administration of estates, appointment of guardianships, and small claims.

Howard public court records are documents, files, and exhibits generated by the county's courts that can be accessed by the public. These records consist of court schedules, warrants, court filings, court orders, writs, transcripts, docket listings, legal proceedings, and rulings of the county's courts. The Howard County Clerk prepares, arranges, indexes, presents, and stores the county's court records in compliance with state laws.

The Howard County Clerk of the Courts provides access to these types of court records unless sealed by court orders:
