Floyd County

Created in 1819, Floyd County is located in the southeastern portion of Indiana and has the second smallest land area in the state. It encompasses 148 miles squared and, based on the 2020 US census, maintains an 80,484 population. New Albany is its largest city and county seat.

The Floyd County court system comprises Circuit and Superior Courts. As the county's top court, the Floyd County Circuit Court typically hears cases that fall outside the Superior Court's purview. It has exclusive jurisdiction over juvenile issues and probate cases, including juvenile drug rehabilitation, minor mental health treatment, dependency, juvenile delinquency, truancy, wills, estates, and guardianships. In addition, it hears felony cases, alimony, child support, paternity cases, divorces, annulments, and probate cases. Furthermore, the Floyd County Circuit Court hears appeals from the Superior Court.

The Floyd County Superior Court is divided into four courts: Superior Court 1, Superior Court 2, and Superior Court 3. They hear traffic infractions, domestic violence, drug cases, misdemeanors, municipal ordinance violations, some civil cases, and small claims.

Floyd's public court records are publicly accessible text, audio, and video files generated by the county's courts. These court records consist of docket listings, warrants, court filings, court orders, writs, transcripts, legal proceedings, sentences, and judgments of the county's courts. Indiana allows members of the public to access most court records except those made confidential by law or court orders. The Floyd County Clerk maintains the county's court records in compliance with state regulations.
