Dubois County

Dubois County was established in 1818 and is named after the French military figure, Toussaint Dubois. It is the sole county within the Jasper Micropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of 43,546. The largest city in the county is Jasper, which was designated as the county seat in 1830.

The three courts within the Dubois County court system are the Superior Court, Circuit Court, and Town Court. Commonly known as the 57th Judicial Circuit Court, the Dubois Circuit Court is the primary trial court that handles several types of criminal cases, including battery, kidnapping, forgery, homicides, and crimes against public administration. It also hears any type of civil litigation, divorce, and child support enforcement matters.

The Dubois Superior Court acts as a supplementary body to the Circuit Court. It has equal jurisdiction with the Circuit Court and determines criminal matters, such as arson, drug cases, loan sharking, conservation violations, stalking, theft, and gambling. Additionally, this court presides over probate, juvenile, traffic, and small claims matters.

The DeMotte Town Court was created by local ordinances and typically addresses cases involving the violation of town ordinances, infractions, and misdemeanors.

Dubois County court records include all documents and information associated with cases heard in the county courts and are maintained by the Dubois County Clerk of Courts. Unless excluded by Rule 5 of the Rules on Access to Court Records, these records are available for public inspection in both paper and digital forms. Interested parties may visit the Clerk's Office, located at One Courthouse Square, Jasper, IN 47546, during official hours to review court documents or obtain copies.
