Clinton County
Located in the center of Indiana, Clinton County was established in 1831 and named after the architect of the Erie Canal and the seventh governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton. It has a land area of 403 square miles and about 33,000 residents. Frankfort is its county seat and largest city.
The Clinton County court system comprises a circuit and superior courts. As the county's highest court, the Clinton County Circuit Court hears all cases outside the Superior Court's purview. In addition to civil disputes with claims above $10,000, it hears felonies and some probate matters. Most domestic relations cases, including legal separations, divorces, annulments, spousal maintenance, and termination of parental rights, are also heard by it. Furthermore, it shares jurisdiction over juvenile matters with the Superior Court.
The Clinton County Superior Court handles misdemeanors, levels one to four felonies, traffic offenses, probate matters, certain juvenile delinquent cases, civil lawsuits with claims under $10,000, and small claims cases. Additionally, it oversees civil weddings, adoptions, preliminary felony hearings, and situations involving workplace violence.
