Kane County
With a population of over 500,000 people, Kane County is ranked the fifth most populous county in Illinois. Established January 16, 1836, the county covers over 500 square miles and was named after Elias Kane, the first secretary of state of Illinois.
The trial court system in Kane County comprises the Civil, Family, Felony, Juvenile, and Misdemeanor/Traffic Divisions of the Kane County Courts. The Civil Division has general jurisdiction over eviction, probate, small claims, and foreclosure cases. The Family Division handles divorce, separation, custody, and related cases.
The Felony Division supervises jury trials for more serious offenses, such as first-degree murder and aggravated domestic battery, while the Misdemeanor Division handles traffic violations and non-compliance with county ordinances. The Juvenile Division hears juvenile abuse, juvenile delinquency, adoption, and related cases.
