Jackson County
Located in the southern part of Illinois, Jackson County was created in 1816 and named after the seventh US President, Andrew Jackson. It has a land area of 584 square miles, and about 53,000 people live within its boundaries. Carbondale is its largest city, while Murphysboro is its county seat.
Jackson County's sole court is the Jackson County Circuit Court. Organized into divisions according to case types, the Circuit Court has general jurisdiction over all criminal and civil cases. All civil, probate, juvenile, domestic relations, and small claims cases are handled by the Civil Division. It hears divorces, annulments, legal separations, alimony, emancipations, paternity, child custody, termination of parental rights, juvenile delinquency, wills, estates, guardianships, conservatorships, and child neglect cases. The Criminal Division handles all felonies and misdemeanors. All traffic infractions and parking offenses are heard by the Traffic Division.
