Shoshone County
Commonly referred to as the Silver Valley due to its rich mining history, Shoshone County was established in January 1861 and was named for the Native American Shoshone tribe. Shoshone County's resident population is approximately 14,026 and it covers 2,636 square miles of land area, with about 87 percent of this classified as âforest uplands.â
The Shoshone County trial court system falls under the 1st Judicial District of Idaho's Integrated Court System and comprises a District Court and Magistrate Division. The District Court has original jurisdiction over all civil and criminal matters but typically handles civil cases involving more than $10,000, felonies, and other serious criminal cases and assigns the rest to the Magistrate Division. This court also hears appeals on decisions reached by the Magistrate Division. The Magistrate's Division (commonly referred to as the Magistrate Court) handles a wide range of matters assigned by the District Court. These include felony preliminary hearings, infractions, misdemeanors, guardianships, civil cases that do not involve more than $10,000, conservatorships, divorces, adoptions, termination of parental rights cases, juvenile cases, and habeas corpus cases.
Shoshone County is also home to Alternative Sentencing and Problem Solving Courts that focus on rehabilitation and reducing recidivism by offering certain offenders an alternative to traditional incarceration through intensive, court-supervised programs.
