Bonneville County

Bonneville County was founded on February 7, 1911. It is the most populated county in eastern Idaho. The county has a total area measuring 1,901 square miles. It was named after Benjamin Bonneville was a French native who became a U.S. Army officer. He was also a successful explorer who traveled throughout the American West. Idaho Falls serves as its county seat and also its largest city.

A District Court (major court) and Magistrate Court (minor court) are responsible for the fair administration of justice in Bonneville County. The 7th Judicial District Court is a court of general jurisdiction. It handles disputes that involve amounts up to $5,000 (small claims), child protection cases, juvenile cases, and civil cases in which the amount of money in dispute is up to $10,000. The Magistrate Court serves as the lower court of justice. It hears misdemeanors and conducts initial hearings for felonies, probate of wills, and guardianship cases.

Court records are documented files, orders, summonses, charges, and judgments that carry a report of what transpired in court. Bonneville County has made a shift from a paper-based format to an electronic means of storing court records information. The Clerk of Court is responsible for documenting accurate records of case adjudications and dispositions.

According to the Idaho Public Records Act and State Court Administrative Rule 32, anyone is granted access to examine and inspect court records. To this effect, the public does not face restrictions when viewing the case summary of events or transcripts of the following:

  • Probate Court Records
  • Family Law Court Records
  • Criminal Court Records
