Story County
Story County is located in central Iowa. It covers 576 square miles and was established in 1846. The county was named for a pre-eminent U.S. Supreme Court justice in 1853 - Joseph Story. Story County has a population of over 90,000 residents.
The district court located in Nevada is the only trial court in the county. The district court has general jurisdiction on almost all criminal and civil case types. It has divisions for small claims, probate, and juvenile court.
The small claims division provides a simplified process for civil claims involving limited amounts in disputes, including landlord-tenant disputes. The probate division of the district court presides over estates of decedents and absentees, conservatorships, guardianships, construction of wills, trusts and trustees, and other probate matters.
The juvenile division has original jurisdiction over adoption, juvenile delinquency, CINS (children in need of assistance), termination of parental rights, families in need of assistance, foster care placement, and matters relating to abortion notification waiver hearings.
