Jasper County
Jasper County, Iowa, was established in 1846. It was named after Sergeant William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero. Covering an area of approximately 733 square miles, it is located in the central part of the state. The county seat is Newton. As of July 1, 2023, Jasper County's population was estimated at 37,919, according to the United States Census Bureau. Jasper County's court system has a District Court with a number of divisions.
Jasper County District Court belongs to Iowa's 5th Judicial District. The District Court has general jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases. These include misdemeanors, felonies, divorce, child custody, and probate cases involving guardianships and estates. The Family Law Mediation Division is handled by expert mediators. They are experienced in family law and are trained to help find solutions to family law matters. These mediators help couples to settle their disputes in a way they both find acceptable. The Juvenile Court division of the District Court hears cases of adoption, termination of parental rights, families or children in need of assistance, and juvenile delinquency. Cases involving civil claims that do not exceed $6,500 and simple misdemeanors are handled by the Small Claims Court. It also hears some landlord-tenant disputes.
