Walton County

Walton County was founded in 1818 and named after George Walton, a former United States Senator. As of 2020, the county's population was 96,673 while covering about 327 square miles of land in the western region of Georgia. Its county seat and most populous city is Monroe.

The Walton County trial courts comprise the Superior, State, Juvenile, Probate, Magistrate, and Municipal Courts. The Superior Court exercises exclusive authority over civil equity lawsuits, felony trials, and land title disputes. Its Family Division is tasked with resolving domestic violence cases, divorces, parentage lawsuits, and child custody cases. Meanwhile, Walton County's Juvenile Court is in charge of all legal proceedings involving minors. This includes juvenile delinquencies, child dependency cases, and truancy issues. The Probate Court in Walton County oversees probate matters such as the handling of wills and guardianships. Traffic crimes, misdemeanors, and civil actions outside the Superior Court's jurisdiction are resolved at the county's Magistrate Court. The county's magistrates also grant bail, issue search warrants, and hold courts of inquiry. Walton County's Municipal Courts located in Monroe and Loganville have jurisdiction over criminal preliminary hearings and civil violations.
