Madison County

Madison County was formed in 1811 by an Act of the General Assembly of Georgia from parts of Clarke, Elbert, Franklin, Jackson, and Oglethorpe Counties. The county has a land area of about 282.3 square miles and an estimated population of 30,378. The county seat is the City of Danielsville.

Madison County court system comprises a Superior Court, a Juvenile Court, a Magistrate Court, a Probate Court, and Municipal Courts. The Superior Court handles felonies, divorce, and civil cases. It hears appeals from administrative agencies and lower courts. The Magistrate Court conducts preliminary hearings of felonies and issues arrest warrants. It deals with misdemeanors, ordinance violations, and civil cases of $15,000 or less. The Juvenile Court handles all cases, such as juvenile delinquency, child custody, and support or paternity involving minors under 18 years. The Probate Court handles matters involving the estates of decedents, guardianship, traffic infractions, and mental health cases. The Municipal Courts conduct preliminary hearings of criminal cases and preside over traffic infractions and ordinance violations.
