Gordon County
Gordon County is located in the northwestern region of Georgia and was formed from Cass and Floyd Counties in 1850. It was named after William Washington Gordon, the pioneer president of the Central of Georgia Railroad and the first Georgian to graduate from West Point. It has a land area of 356 square miles and, according to the 2020 US census, a population consisting of 57,544. Calhoun the largest city as well as the seat of the county.
The Gordon County court network is composed of the following:
- The Gordon County Superior Court - handles criminal and civil cases beyond the jurisdiction of other courts. It hears felonies, domestic relations matters, land title disputes, adoptions, and equity cases. It also serves as the appellate court for other courts in the county
- The Gordon County Juvenile Court - hears all juvenile matters except juvenile crimes involving murder, rape, and armed robbery. It hears juvenile delinquency, juvenile traffic offenses, child abuse, and child neglect cases
- The Gordon County Probate Court - administers trusts and estates, admits wills, appoints conservatorships and guardianships, and issues marriage licenses. It also issues permits for firearms, explosives, and fireworks
- The Gordon County Magistrate Court - hears tenant/landlord issues, minor criminal offenses, civil cases having claims under $15,000, preliminary felony hearings, and municipal ordinance violations
- Gordon County municipal courts manage preliminary hearings for select violations of municipal ordinances and for some criminal cases. There are municipal courts in Calhoun, Fairmount, and Resaca
Gordon County public court records are made of court schedules, writs, court filings, depositions, warrants, court transcripts, motions, orders, sentences, and judgments from the county courts. These documents and files are accessible by the public except when sealed by law or court orders. The Gordon County Clerk of the Superior Court maintains every public court record from within the Superior Court, while the clerks from the other courts maintain records generated from their courts. Court clerks organize, prepare, index, and store court records in compliance with county regulations.
