Carroll County

Carroll County got its start in 1826. It was created using lands obtained via a treaty with the Creek and Cherokee Indian Nations. Its land area is about 499.1 square miles, with an estimated population of 120,060. The county seat is located in the city of Carrollton.

Carroll County judicial and court services include a Superior Court, a State Court, a Juvenile Court, a Magistrate Court, a Probate Court, and Municipal Courts. The Superior Court presides over felonies, divorce, civil, and cases involving titles to land. It may correct errors made by the lower courts. The State Court of Carroll County handles misdemeanors, traffic infractions, and ordinance violations. The Magistrate Court deals with preliminary hearings of felonies, misdemeanors, ordinance violations, and small claims cases (less than $15,000). Carroll County Probate Court has authority over the decedent's will, estate, mental health, and appointment of guardians for minors or incapacitated adults. The Juvenile Court addresses matters involving child abuse and neglect or criminal cases against children. Some cities in Carroll County establish Municipal Courts to conduct preliminary hearings of criminal cases, traffic infractions, and ordinance violations.
