Volusia County
Volusia County's name is derived from the community of Volusia as early as 1815. It was established on December 29, 1854, from part of Orange County. At present, the county has a population of 578,192, covering an area of 1,101.1 square miles. Situated on the east coast of Central Florida, water sports are plentiful in Volusia, though oceanfront communities are also known for their land sports.
There are four Circuit Courts and Three County Courts in the county. This is part of the 7th Judicial Circuit of Florida. County courts include the Daytona Beach Courthouse Annex, New Smyrna Beach Courthouse Annex, and the Volusia County Courthouse. The Circuit court centers include the Daytona Beach Courthouse and the New Smyrna Beach Courthouse, with the addition of the Daytona Beach Justice Centre. Eighteen Circuit judges and ten County Court judges are assigned to preside over the cases in Volusia County. The cases heard are civil, criminal, family, small claims, probate, juvenile, and traffic cases. Above 140,000 cases are heard every year.
