Monroe County
Located in the southernmost part of Florida, Monroe County was created in 1823 and named after the fifth US President, James Monroe. Over 82,000 residents live within the county's 983 square miles of land. Its county seat and largest city is Key West.
Monroe County has two courts: Monroe County Circuit Court and County Court of Monroe County. Both courts are located in the three biggest cities in the county: Plantation Key, Marathon, and Key West. The highest court in the county, the Monroe County Circuit Court, hears cases that fall outside the County Court's purview. It considers all felonies, some misdemeanors, and civil matters with claims over $15,000. It hears juvenile, family law, and probate cases, including mental health issues, divorces, annulments, child custody, juvenile delinquency, truancy, admission of wills, the appointment of guardianships, administration of estates and trusts, paternity, and maintenance.
The County Court of Monroe County hears violations of county ordinances and municipal codes. It also hears most misdemeanors, juvenile traffic infractions, and civil cases with claims under $15,000.
Monroe County public court records are documents, files, and exhibits containing the legal proceedings and judgments of the county's courts and are made available to anyone upon request. Court filings, writs, depositions, warrants, orders, court transcripts, motions, and judgments are all examples of these records. These documents are kept up to date by the Monroe County Clerk of Circuit Court and Comptroller in accordance with local and state regulations.
